Algeria: Army Chief General Ahmed Gaïd Salah Dies

The Algerian Chief of Staff and deputy minister of Defense, General Ahmed Gaïd Salah, died on Monday of a heart attack at the age of 80, according to a statement issued by the Algerian presidency.

General Gaïd Salah passed away at his home in Algiers, said the statement, quoted by the Algerian news agency.

Algeria’s president Abdelmadjid Tebboun appointed Major General Saïd Chengriha as acting Chief of Staff of the army, the same source added. He also declared three days of national mourning.
