The case of the Moroccan homosexual man from Marrakech has gone viral once again, following his widely shared pictures and videos from New Year’s Eve. The man, AKA Chafik, revealed his intentions to move to Canada where he wishes to settle, hoping to start a new life.
The 33-years-old Chafik appeared in the pictures wearing a blue dress, while being handcuffed by the police officers who marked their presence to the scene in order to investigate the car accident that Chafik was involved in.
During his interview with TVE News Channel, Chafik said he was insulted by the police in question for they have treated him as a “criminal”.
Chafik, who preferred to keep his identity hidden throughout the interview, said he intends to leave Morocco as soon as possible, for the law in Morocco sentences homosexuals to prison terms up to 3 years; therefore, he chose to move to Canada to enjoy a more stable life.
Chafik has also revealed he has no reason to stay in Morocco, for his family, let alone society, make his life extra difficult, noting that he is planning to seek refuge in Canada since life in Morocco for a man like him is unbearable.
Chafik’s case became top news following his arrest by the police, while he was wearing a blue dress, a wig, and a light mask.
“I had a simple car accident; however, I found myself rushed into stepping out of my car by the authorities and the eager people who were everywhere around me”, Chafik stated.
“I have been receiving threats; besides, everybody seems to know where I live, as well as my sexual orientation”, Chafik said. “I am really considering leaving Morocco because justice is far from being served where I live; in addition, authorities did not take any legal actions against the person who took pictures of me the day of the accident””, he added.
Chafik also revealed that he is currently living in Rabat, since his hometown is no more an option for him to live at; pointing that a number of police officers published his ID information on social networks, and that investigating their motives will not grant him the peaceful life he always dreamt of, especially that his “secret” sexual orientation is now common knowledge.
It is noteworthy that the Director General of National Security, Abdellatif Al-Hamoushi, has decided to punish the police officers involved in the case for failing to protect a fellow citizen against the people present in the scene.
