Protest – Morocco’s Air Traffic Technicians Plan to Go on a Strike from January 18 to 23

Flights to and from Morocco’s airports are likely to be seriously disrupted in January. Air traffic and safety technicians are threatening to go on a five-day strike in January if their demands are not met.

After a first threat of strike brandished last October 20, the air technicians are planning to paralyse air traffic from January 18 to 23, coinciding with the school holidays.

The air technicians say in a statement that this walkout will be accompanied by several sit-ins at all airports in the Kingdom.

The statement, quoted by the daily Almassae, does not mention the causes of the strike, but the air technicians had strongly denounced last October the “unilateral” revision of their wages and benefits by the ONDA.

This revaluation was deemed “insignificant” by the technicians in charge of the control of the air traffic and the safety and decided to put again the pressure on the ONDA.

If the air technicians execute this threat, it is necessary to fear a total paralysis of Morocco’s airports during the five days that this social movement will last.

Not to mention the huge financial cost for ONDA, which will be obliged to use foreign personnel to ensure the control and safety of air traffic, as for the many airlines companies that serve the various airports of Morocco during this period.
