Alleged Terrorist Wanted by Morocco Arrested in Spain

The Spanish national police announced on Wednesday the arrest in Santa Coloma de Gramanet, near Barcelona (northeast), of a Moroccan national who was wanted by the Moroccan authorities for “belonging to a terrorist organization” and “drug trafficking”.

The arrest of this individual (30 years old) on Tuesday comes “following an international arrest warrant issued by Morocco” and in collaboration with the Moroccan authorities, the same source said in a statement.

It pointed out that this is “an illustration of how to tackle a global phenomenon requiring an effort that transcends borders and solid international security cooperation such as that between Spain and Morocco”.

The arrested man had left the Kingdom in September 2018, after the Moroccan authorities dismantled a terrorist cell of which he was a member.

“Analysis of the information obtained by Spanish national police investigators revealed that the individual in question had entered Spanish territory illegally,” the statement said.

A search was carried out by the Spanish police at the home where the suspect was hiding in the town of Santa Coloma de Gramanet.
