China Considers Morocco as Important Actor in Implementation of its Strategic Project ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (FM)

China considers Morocco to be an important actor in the implementation of its major strategic project “The Belt and Road initiative”, said, Friday in Beijing, minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita.

In a statement to MAP on the sidelines of the 2nd Forum of the “Belt and Road” initiative, Bourita stressed that Morocco’s participation in this event testifies to its assets and potential to contribute to the implementation of this major project, whether in terms of political stability, strategic position or economic momentum.

He noted that Morocco’s support to this flagship project also takes place within the framework of the strategic partnership between the two countries whose agreement was signed by HM King Mohammed VI and Chinese president Xi Jinping during the Sovereign’s visit to China in May 2016, adding that this agreement underlines the importance of the “Belt and Road” initiative and Morocco’s role in its implementation, in addition to the bilateral dimension through the development of Chinese trade and investment in the Kingdom.

The “Belt and Road” initiative is of particular interest as it aims to promote regional integration, interconnection and the construction of major infrastructure, which will better connect continents and create important economic bridges between Africa and Asia and between Africa and Europe, he said.

On the sidelines of this international Forum, Bourita held bilateral meetings with heads of delegations who took part in the event as well as with Chinese officials. The talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in various areas, promoting political and diplomatic relations and exchanging views on a number of issues of common interest.

Earlier in the day, the minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation participated in the high-level meeting of the Forum chaired by Chinese president Xi Jinping.
