Health Ministry: Over 2 Million Moroccans Are Diabetic

More than 2 million people aged 18 and over in Morocco are diabetic, 50% of whom are unaware of their disease, while the number of children with diabetes is estimated at more than 15,000, the ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

In a statement issued on the occasion of World Diabetes Day celebrated this year under the theme: “The family and diabetes,” the ministry pointed out that more than 823,000 people with diabetes are taken care of at the level of primary health care facilities.

In addition, the Health department earmarks an annual budget of approximately 156,700,000 dirhams for the purchase of insulin and oral antidiabetics and 15 million dirhams for the acquisition of medical-technical equipment and reagents to ensure diabetes screening and metabolic monitoring of diabetics, the same source added.

Aware of the importance of diabetes prevention and control, the ministry has made it a priority in its sectoral health plans to reduce the burden of morbidity and mortality due to this disease, and thus reduce the economic cost on the affected person, his family and the health system, the ministry noted.
