Morocco – El Othmani announces “important” measures for Jerada inhabitants

Head of Government, Saad Eddine El Othmani, announced on Saturday in Oujda several “important” decisions for the inhabitants of the north-eastern province of Jerada, stressing that the government has set up an integrated program for the development of the region.

El Othmani, who was accompanied by several members of the government, said in a meeting held in the presence of the Wali of the region, President of the Council of the region, MPs, elected officials and representatives of the private sector and civil society, that all licences for the exploitation of minerals that do not respect legal requirements will be withdrawn.

This decision was taken following the results of the investigation conducted and will be implemented very soon, he pointed out.

He also said that a study on the mineral sector has been launched, noting there are minerals in the region that were not exploited, such as lead, zinc and copper.

In the light of the results of this study, various types of minerals will be exploited in the region of Jerada in a way that will benefit the population in terms of development, he said.

Regarding the workers from the “Charbonnages du Maroc (CDM)”, El Othmani said that the transfer of houses occupied by some workers of the said company will soon be completed.

The Head of Government announced that 2.5 million dirhams will be provided to the legal unit in charge of coordination with the pension and insurance fund in order to manage records of occupational diseases of the employees of Charbonnages du Maroc.

Regarding efforts to develop the province, El Othmani said that the Jerada Industrial Zone, whose works have been launched, will enable young entrepreneurs to carry out projects through allocation of land.

The government has also mobilized 3,000 hectares for agriculture, he said, adding that 1,000 ha will be dedicated to rights holders and 2,000 ha for young people.
