Politics – «Morocco Spares No Effort in Combating Economic & Terrorist Crimes», says El Othmani

Aware of the serious repercussions and the multiple scopes of money laundering and terrorist financing, as well as the scale of the resulting challenges, Morocco spares no effort in fighting economic, financial and terrorist crimes in all forms, and in setting up the necessary measures in order to eradicate their sources of funding, said, Monday in Rabat, head of government, Saad Eddine El Othmani.

In a speech at the opening of the joint Middle-East/Africa workshop on typologies and capacity building to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, held under the patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, El Othmani underlined that Morocco has set up important initiatives to improve the legislative environment and consolidate the effectiveness of anti-money laundering and anti-financing of terrorism measures, in accordance with international standards, conventions, agreements and the various Security Council resolutions on the matter.

In this regard, El Othmani said that the Kingdom has adopted a national system against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, based on an integrated vision for the eradication of crime in all its forms and according to a global approach that involves the implementation of the various legal and preventive mechanisms.

He added that Morocco endeavors to strengthen national coordination and international cooperation as mechanisms to cope with the geographical extensions of these criminal activities and to benefit from successful international practices and experiences in this area.

Highlighting some of the founding pillars of the national system to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, El Othmani noted that at the legislative level, the Kingdom has adopted a law that is compatible with international standards to combat these scourges.

The choice of Morocco to host this workshop reflects the important position it occupies within the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force as a founding member of the group and the good relations it has with all member countries and the rest of the African continent, El Othmani noted.
