PROTEST – Morocco’s Descartes high school teachers to go on strike against tough changes

Descartes high school teachers in Rabat have called for a strike on Monday 27 November to protest against the cutting of expatriate teaching posts and of resident teachers beginning next year.

In a press release, the teachers of Lycée Descartes said that 80 expatriate teaching posts and 100 resident teaching posts within the French agency “AEFE” (Agency for French Education Abroad) will be cut next year in French primary, secondary and high schools abroad and 66 expatriate posts and 100 teaching resident posts in 2019 as well as at in 2020.

They also denounce the budget cuts, stressing that these measures will affect the quality of the education in French schools abroad, especially since theses cuts also concern teachers in-service training and the locally recruited teachers initial training.

Moreover, the communiqué notes that the already high tuition fees may increase without the guarantee of quality education.
