Stampede – A least six Moroccan poor women dead in a jostle near Essaouira for a flour bag (Photos)

At least six Moroccan poor women died Sunday in a jostle during a distribution of free bags of flour at Sidi Bouslamti near the coastal city of Essaouira.

The women had been waiting since dawn to benefit from the flour donated by a philanthropist, whose identity was not revealed by social networks which have diffused the images of this sad incident.

A judiciary “investigation” is underway, according to the semi-official website Le360.

While waiting for the official version regarding this jostling, the question is how this incident is possible in a country where the official speech affirms that the poverty is in “net recession” in Morocco. In fact, a bag of flour costs neither more than 50 dirhams.

Dying for “a piece of bread” illustrates clearly the social gap between the rich and the poor in the kingdom that the statistics of the HCP can not hide or justify at the end of the 2nd decade of the 21st century.
