Very content to qualify for the World Cup Russia 2018, the Lions of Atlas hurried back to Morocco, few hours only after defeating the Ivory Coast elephants, to celebrate with all the Moroccans this historic achievement.
The Moroccan football team led by French technician Hervé Renard arrived at Rabat-Salé airport on Sunday around 01:30 on board a special flight from Abidjan, where they delivered a memorable match against Gervinhio’s teammates.
A large crowd of fans gathered at the airport to welcome the heroes of the evening of 11.11.17 which will remain forever etched in the memory of a whole people and of all lovers of football.
Because to qualify at the expense of the very experienced and the very strong team of Elephants is a feat that few teams in the world can achieve.
The joy of Moroccan people is all the greater as their national team finished qualifying matches at the top of a very strong group (C Group), without conceding any defeat and any goal and by signing 3 wins and 3 draws.
A real exploit that allows the Lions of Atlas to be present next summer in Russia to compete in the 5th World Cup of their history, 20 years after their last qualification for the great celebration of football. It was in 1998 in France.
Morocco will join three other Arab countries in Russia: Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Tunisia.
Delighted by this historic qualification, the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) Fouzi Lakjaa, said upon the arrival of the national team at the airport that this victory “put back Moroccan football in its place”.
This qualification, beautifully achieved, will restore the image of our national football and will help Morocco’s bid for the organization of World Cup 2026.
One week after Casablanca’s Wydad won the African Champions League final, the national team realized the dream so much cherished by the Moroccans who came out on the streets of the cities by thousands to savour, until the early hours of Sunday, a deserved qualification obtained by high straggle by Mehdi Benatia’s teammates.
Morocco’s diaspora, too, has proved, once again, his unwavering attachment to his country by showing his joy after this victory in all the host countries.
