Morocco denounced, Tuesday, Algeria’s shirking its international responsibility concerning the Tindouf camps populations and the little importance it gives to their humanitarian tragedy.
Unlike real host countries, Algeria is the only one to refuse to conduct a headcount of the populations in the Tindouf camps and is shirking its international responsibilities towards them, said Morocco’s chargé d’affaires in Geneva Hassan Boukili at the 71st session of the Standing Committee of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) held on March 6-8 in Geneva.
He noted that, unlike host countries that are effectively and generously committed to assisting and protecting refugees, Algeria is a unique case and a unique situation in the history of protecting and providing international assistance to refugees. “Unlike the real host countries that suffering the real costs of refugee situations which they have not chosen, Algeria has chosen to suffer an alleged situation of « Sahrawi refugees », which is its own creation, said the diplomat.
Boukili explained that it is the only country to oppose the implementation of all the durable solutions for the populations in the Tindouf camps and to impose on them the implementation of an obsolete settlement plan that is definitively ruled out by the United Nations. The opposition of Algeria to the census of the camps’ populations, to their free return to Morocco, to their integration in Algeria, to their resettlement and to their self-sufficiency confirm that this country is shirking its international responsibility and the little importance it gives to these populations’ humanitarian tragedy.
