Controversy – “Moroccans who live on 20 dirhams ($2) a day are not considered poor,” said Islamist Minister Bassima Hakkaoui

PJD’s “indefinable Minister” in charge of Family and Solidarity, Bassima Hakkaoui, has recently made an odd statement, in respect to her Islamist political background.

Known for her opposition to the Moroccan feminist movement, Hakkaoui claimed that “those who earn 20 dirhams a day shall not be considered poor”, Assabah reported.

The Minister tried to back up her statement based on HCP’s latest report, stating that the number of poor people in Morocco has reportedly declined from 10 to 4 million people “living on 20 dirhams a day”, as those who are actually suffering from extreme poverty are those making 10 dirhams a day; which seem not to exceed 450.000 people.

Such statement caused a real media storm, for internet users have denounced PJD’s “hypocritical” political position, which tends to switch positions in order to stay in power.

It is noteworthy that Hakkaoui is paid seven thousand dollars per month, besides other privileges due to her office-term profession.
